Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce

Who doesn’t love a soft pretzel?  I cannot go into Sam’s Club with the kids without getting a few salty pretzels with cheese cups.  My kids love them and who am I kidding, I do too.

For these homemade soft pretzels, I wanted to have a sweet, delicious sauce and with Cinco de Mayo coming up, I thought what better sauce than a strawberry margarita sauce?  It’s packed with fresh strawberry flavors, lime juice and zest and some tequila!

Take those salty soft pretzels and dip them right into the Strawberry Margarita Sauce.  It’s a refreshing strawberry margarita but in delicious food form!

Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce

I’ve been meaning to make soft pretzels at home for quite some time but it wasn’t until the Festive Foodie group on Facebook posted about #NationalPretzelDay that I got my butt into gear to really make them.

And boy, oh boy am I glad I did.  Not only are these easy soft pretzels with strawberry margarita sauce delicious, they’re super fun to make at home.  Next time, I am going to sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar for a sweet pretzel.

Lately, I’m all about the strawberries.  they’re one of my family’s favorite fruits so we always have a few pounds in the house.

With Cinco de Mayo right around the corner, I figured an awesome strawberry margarita sauce would be great with these soft pretzels.

The strawberry margarita sauce can be put onto ice cream, brownies, pound cake and licked right off the spoon.  It’s simple to make and is perfect if you’ve got a fridge full of freshly picked berries like I do every summer.

It would also be awesome frozen into some popsicle molds or made into fruit leather.  Oh, I am SO doing that!

Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce

I found this awesome “perfect pretzel baking sheet” on Amazon that I think would help with the shaping of the pretzels, but honestly, it was super easy and I think I did a pretty good job for my first jab at homemade soft pretzels.

Don’t be intimated and get out there and make these Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce.

Bring the taste of the fair right into your home and celebrate #NationalPretzelDay with these delicious homemade Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce.

Ingredients

Strawberry Margarita Sauce

  • 1 1/4 lbs (20 ounces strawberries, quartered
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lime zest
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons tequila
  • 1 tablespoons triple sec, optional

Soft Pretzels

  • 3/4 cup milk, I used whole milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 2 1/3 cups all purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 3 cup hot water
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • pretzel salt or coarse salt

Instructions

Strawberry Margarita Sauce

  1. Place all ingredients into a large pot and bring to a boil.  Reduced heat to a simmer and continue to cook for 25 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  2. Using an immersion blender or a potato masher, blend strawberry margarita sauce until desired consistency.  Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.

Soft Pretzels

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk, water and sugar until warmed.  Place into the bowl of your stand mixer. Sprinkle with yeast and let sit for 5 minutes or until foamy.  Add in 2 1/3 cups flour, butter and 1 1/4 teaspoon salt.  With the hook attachment of your stand mixer, beat on low speed for 2 minutes or until combined.  Increase speed to medium low and beat for 8 additional minutes.  If the dough seems too sticky, add in additional flour.
  2. Flour a work surface and turn out dough onto surface.  Knead a few times, shape into a ball and place into a ball coated with cooking spray or olive oil.  Turn the ball so the entire surface is covered in oil.  Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.*
  3. Preheat oven to 450 degrees f.  Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat.  Turn out dough onto clean work surface and divide into 8 pieces.  Roll each piece into a 25 inch rope.
  4. To shape the pretzels, form a U shape.  Cross the ends over each other twice, then lift the ends across to the bottom of the U shape and press to seal.
  5. Place 3 cups water into a large bowl and stir in baking soda.  Submerge each pretzel dough into the water for 10 seconds, remove with a slotted spoon and place onto a paper towel to blot the bottoms dry.  Place onto prepared baking sheet.
  6. Into a small bowl, mix together egg yolk and water.  Brush mixture over each pretzel and sprinkle with salt, if desired.
  7. Bake in the oven for 9-11 minutes or until golden brown.

*Whenever I need a dough to rise, I place the bowl, with dough, onto a heating pad, set over low and cover with a towel.

These Soft Pretzels with Strawberry Margarita Sauce are also fabulous with cheese.  I’m a sucker for a great pretzel with cheese.

If you aren’t into making your own cheese sauce, I highly recommend Rico’s Nacho Cheese.  It tastes just like the fair.  I used it here in these Braised Beef Nacho burritos and have had a back stock of nacho cheese sauce since.

Thanks for joining us today to celebrate the pretzel, Megan! I laugh whenever I see other people’s beautiful homemade pretzels. It took me forever to figure out how to make that shape; I’m clearly shape-challenged.
