Dry Spice Rub + Free Printable for Father’s Day

This dry spice rub is perfect for beef, chicken and pork, comes together in a snap and would make the perfect gift for the grilling dad in your family this Father’s Day.  

Use this dry rub to make these amazing Dry Rubbed Pork Ribs.

For as long as I can remember my dad has been the grill master in our family.  I grew up watching him BBQ chicken, grill hot dogs and roast corn on the cob all on the Weber in our backyard.  I’d always go outside and watch what he was grilling up for dinner and get so anxious to eat the delicious smelling food that was wafting from the grill.

I need not remind you of how much I love the smell of the grill (you can read about it in this post where I talk about grill scented cologne, yes that happened) but my love affair with the grill it doesn’t stop there.

I crave food from the grill.  So much so that I long for the days of summer.  Yes, I know I could grill in the wintertime but have you lived through a winter in Central, IL?!  I rest my case.  I mean, what’s not to love about the grill?  You don’t have to heat the house, there’s little to no cleanup and the food is awesome.

 The overly charred burnt parts are my favorite and lucky for me the rest of my family hates them.  There are so many foods you can throw on the grill, the possibilities are endless and that’s another reason why the grill is my favorite “kitchen appliance.”

I recently decided I wanted to start learning how to grill.  Up until this point, my husband has always been the one to grill.  I’d watch him fill up the chimney starter, pour in the hot coals and cook our dinner.  Then I realized I was missing out on all the fun!  I first grilled some strawberry shortcake kabobs, then it was jalapenos and most recently Beer Can Chicken.  (I’ll be sharing all of these recipes with you soon.)  There’s no stopping me now. Nothing is safe from the grill.  Muwahahaha

Beer can chicken is something my dad has always grilled.  He uses a fantastic dry spice rub, the beer keeps the chicken moist and it has incredible flavor from being smoked on the grill.  Therefore, this dry spice rub is brought to you courtesy of my dad (Hi Dad!)

It combines the classic flavors of BBQ with a little sweet, spicy and smoky.  It’s made with ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry, like black pepper, salt, garlic powder, brown sugar, cayenne, oregano, which also make this a quick and easy recipe.  This spice rub would be perfect on a slab of ribs, chicken breasts or a rib eye steak.

We recently used it on Beer Can Chicken.  We rinsed the chicken inside and out, patted it dry with paper towels and slathered this rub all over the top, inside and under the skin of the bird.  We cracked open a can of beer, took a few healthy slugs, placed a sprig of rosemary into the can and nestled into one of these handy chicken roasters.  Placed the bird on top and grilled it with indirect heat for 1 hour or until the fattest part (the thigh) registered 165 degrees on a meat thermometer.

Isn’t she a beauty?  Do you see those charred edges?  They’re all mine, in case you were wondering.  The meat is juicy and tender and oh so flavorful from the spice rub but the best part, the crispy skin.

After dinner I got to thinking with Father’s day right around the corner, this dry spice rub would be perfect to package up into a cute little container and give it to dad.  You could put it in a little gift basket with some grilling tools, a mitt, chimney starter, a grill basket and maybe a gift card to your local meat shop.  What dad wouldn’t love that?  Actually, I’d love that.

I used a spice container I had recently emptied from Williams-Sonoma but you can purchase spice containers at Amazon (Mr. Bar-B-Q, Inc. 06126X Beer Can Chicken Cooker” target=”_blank”>2 day free shipping for Prime Members) (affiliate link) or I’ve seen glass containers at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Walmart and Target.

With my full-time job being the owner of an invitation/party printable company, Expressions Paperie, I thought I’d create a free printable for you to use for the containers of “Dad’s Spice Rub”  Just click on the picture and hit “Save image as” and then you can open and print them out.

dry-spice-rub-free-printable-for-fathers-day/The round circles are 2″ and you can either cut them out with scissors or use a 2″ circle punch.  You can adhere them to the top and bottom of the jar with double-sided tape or print them out on sticker paper, which I did. The “Happy Father’s Day” banner is 7″ long for you to wrap around the bottles and can also be adhered with double-sided tape.

This dry spice rub is perfect for beef, chicken and pork, comes together in a snap and would make the perfect gift for the grilling dad in your family this Father's Day.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ground white pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground jalapeno pepper, optional
  • 2 tablespoon chili powder
  • 2 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground oregano
  • 2 tablespoons sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 tablespoon celery salt
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Store in an air tight container.
  2. Use on beef, chicken and pork.
  3. Rub on meat and refrigerate at least 2 hours before cooking.

    Thanks for this nifty idea…I’ve shared it with my grilling brother who is a father of 4. Also would be a nice rub for us vegetarians…as we grill too….
