I figured I should probably tell you now being it’s only 9 days away.  I love Halloween, like really LOVE Halloween!  It is right up there with Christmas as my favorite holiday. There’s something about the costumes, candy, spooky creatures, trick or treating and scary movies.  Well, not really scary movies, but cutesy Halloween movies.  I’m talking Hocus Pocus, The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and The Nightmare Before Christmas.  I can’t deal with the truly horrifying movies where you have the sweaty palms, screaming, hiding under the sheets, checking the closets nightly, kind of scary movies.  No, I’ll save those for the brave souls because even at thirty something, I have nightmares.  I cannot even watch The Walking Dead without dreaming a zombie is invading my home and coming after me and my family.  Nope, never again.   If there is ever a zombie apocalypse, I’m the first one going.  #buhbye

Truth be told, I use to love scary movies, when I was little nonetheless.  I must have thought I was fearless back then, LOL.  My sister and I would always stay up real late at night so we could watch Tales from the Crypt.  It was our favorite show.  We would rent Cujo, Chuckie and Nightmare on Elm Street on the regular from the video store.  Thanks Dad!  It was our thing and we loved it, but  I cannot handle to watch them now.  Call me a wuss but I’d rather laugh my butt off than be terrified.    A few years back, I saw Hostel in the theater and almost walked out because it was horrifying and grotesque.  Movies these days just aren’t what they use to be.

I also have fond memories of trick or treating with my dad and sister.  We would walk around the entire block, our bags chock-full of candy, pit stop at home to drop of all our loot and then head back out to a few more streets before calling it a night and enjoying my mom’s beef stew.  She’d always stay back and hand out candy and have beef strew or something hot waiting for us when we got back.  Halloween nights were always so cold and sometimes rainy but that wasn’t stopping us.

My sister and I would sort our candy and money (yes, we got money back then) and throw out the handful of popcorn the elderly lady down the street would throw in our bag each year.  All the Mary Janes would go to my mom, they’re her favorite, I would grab all the Snickers and my sister loved all the sour candy.  It was a win-win-win for all.  I miss those days but I’m so thankful I have children of my own to see the joy in their eyes as they now sort their candy.  Not to mention the Snickers bars I sneak out of their bags when they’re sleeping. Shhh, you know you do it too!

Ahh, memories.  Don’t you just love them?  We’ve now started our own tradition of Halloween, with our wonderful neighbors.  We take the kids trick or treating and then head back to the house to enjoy a potluck of Tom’s chicken and wild rice soup, Avanti’s famous gondolas, my chorizo chili and jello shots.  It’s how we roll.  Last year it was so cold, we actually set up a bunker in the garage complete with an indoor fireplace.  We are legit and don’t mess around when it comes to “Lakewood” parties! 😉  It also makes my heart happy that my sister comes down and takes the children trick or treating with me.  A little bit of nostalgia is good for the soul.

Candy corn.  You either love it or you hate it?  Actually, that’s not true. I don’t love it nor do I hate it.  I’m in between.  While I don’t just enjoy a handful of candy corn on its own, it’s absolutely delicious when paired in a popcorn mix (this is my favorite and I make it every year with the kids and watch Halloween movies) fudge and these Candy Corn Magic Bars.  I, of course, thought I was the first person to ever think of this but a quick google search proved me wrong.  Figures.  In the World of food, it seems someone is always one step ahead of you 😉

What I love about these Candy Corn Magic bars is how versatile they are.  At first I was going to use pecans but then I got to thinking about my favorite popcorn mix from, The Plain Chicken, so I decided to use salted peanuts.  Then, I was going to use orange and black chocolate chips but then decided I didn’t want any dark brown coloring in my bars, so I picked out all the orange ones and paired them with white chocolate chips.  I didn’t stop there with the chips though.  I also added in butterscotch chips, layered on some coconut and then smothered the whole thing in sweetened condensed milk, liquid gold of the Gods.  That stuff is just stupid.  Some of my candy corn did melt, but my trick was to bake the bars for 25 minutes and then for the last 5 minutes, add the candy corn and popped them back into the oven for 5 minutes longer.  The ones of the edge melted a little while the ones in the middle were just fine.

You guys, these are SO, SO good.  So good, I ate one and sent the entire pan to my husband’s work because I know I would eat the entire pan, in one day, and my butt and thighs do not need that.  Believe me.  So without further adieu, Candy Corn Magic Bars.
